    Thank you Emma,

You’re spot on, Cyrus is still is doing 4 naps which was working until now but I have been worrying about when to drop the last nap. He sleeps in sleepsack (no swaddle) and his daytime naps are seemingly getting longer. I mainly worry about what to do with his feeds and making sure he eats enough during daytime hours.

We combo breastfeed and bottle feed formula so the feeds tend to be longer (25-45min total). The majority [80%+] of his food is formula, so maybe I should cap the time he breastfeeds? Or only BF at certain time of day?

I’m not always sure he gets enough food per feeding. I try to keep to one feed per wake window (wake – feed- play – sleep) with the exception of the last one before bed (wake-feed-play-feed-play-bed). This seems to have helped with him sometimes settling independently for bed after his routine.

We had a few crazy weeks with him settling without help for all his naps and wailing for hours at bedtime, then now it seemed to be the other way around wailing for each nap and settling fine for bedtime.

“”Luckily”” the confusion has ended because now he just wants to be held EVERTY time he goes to sleep. I worry this will eventually turn into him waking at for night parties again. I use the settling pyramid but this week he won’t have it and just wails until picked up and held/walked to sleep.

I will try to transition to 3 naps/day and continue teaching him to self soothe with pyramid – do you have any tips on how do I divide his feeds if he still needs at least 5-6 because he won’t take full 6oz each time?

    Thank you, Emma!

PS. After his two midnight parties he has slept through night, I originally thought part of it was he hadn’t eaten quite enough but he did have 4 and 4.5hours of nap time during those days.

    Hi Emma,

I was reading this post as I am having some sudden night time wakings where baby is super awake and won’t go back to sleep after feed and Ive resorted to putting him on play mat O_O probably a mistake. He wakes up and is hungry because he takes 5-6 oz when I feed him, but now he also stays awake after that cooing and making noises until he finally escalates and gets upset.

First step for me is trying to adjust daytime intake so he can go back to sleeping through the night but otherwise what do you do in this case? Not a consistent wake up time, was 3am yesterday, 1 am today.

He is also learning to roll… He is 4m3w ish old.

  • Emma,

I am so sorry to hear your little one had breathing issues. Please let me know whether things have stabilized and I hope she is on the upswing of whatever issue was plaguing her.

Thank you for the reply. Since my last post I pushed through the boob prop and he has now graduated to being settled sometimes in crib with shushing and patting and mostly with me walking him around for less than 5 min. I Always end the walk standing still next to crib to see if he stays calm and if so I put him down. The only worry there is that he seems actually already in phase one just from the short walk and me holding him (sideways firmly supporting his back and tusch, not doing any real rocking or bouncing, just slowly walking around room). So I don’t know whether he is building a good sleep habit there or has just found another prop. Regardless. It is progress. I definitely need to try and make our wake up times more consistent. I find that on nights where he wakes up at 4, he never goes down before 5-5.30 and i feel drained at 6.30-7 and too tired to get up myself. He has had two days of long sleep stretches at night and now back to 1-2 random wake up at night. Im trying to figure out what I did right lol. And also just considering he is only 3 months so things will vary quite a bit still.

Our feedings are quite long as I have to supplement bf with formula and I do try to give him 20 min on breast so I hope he gets as much as possible:/. How long before putting baby down at night for bedtime should I have ended feeding ideally?
